What should I pay attention to when sending air freight to the United States?

Pubdate: 2021-12-30 Source:Rocket Logistics

A dedicated line refers to a transportation channel to a specific country. Generally speaking, the process involves first leg transportation (air, sea, land), including export customs declaration, destination country customs clearance (including tax payment), and destination domestic land transportation; The price and timeliness of a dedicated line are usually determined by first leg transportation. Similarly, air transportation has significant differences in terms of timeliness, cost, and service! Now let's explain the details of the US air freight line

1、 First leg air freight in the United States

The first flight to the United States is divided into mainland flights [Guangzhou flights, Shenzhen flights, Beijing flights], Hong Kong flights (with live cargo), South Korea flights, etc. The actual effect and price vary depending on the port of departure. To understand whether a flight route is good or not, first of all, it depends on where it flies, and secondly, whether it is a direct flight or a connecting flight, how many times a week! If you fly less, your cargo may not be able to schedule this week's flight and run to next week

Analysis of some departure ports (to be supplemented by everyone):

1. Mainland China [Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, etc.]: Generally speaking, only regular cargo can be flown in China. There are many and complete routes from Guangzhou to the United States. In the Pearl River Delta region, only Guangzhou CZ (China Southern Airlines) has cargo planes flying directly to Los Angeles. Although there is also a CA (China International Airlines) direct flight from Shenzhen to Los Angeles, they are all passenger planes with limited capacity and cannot guarantee storage space! Of course, it's not just a direct flight, but many connecting flights are also very fast because most of them are only connecting once, and they usually arrive in two days. Beijing Airlines also has direct flights and transfer flights to the US East for customs clearance. However, most industries are located in southern cities. If goods are transported by truck from Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Beijing Airport, it will take at least 2 days on the road. Coupled with the loading and unloading processes, it is usually 3 days slower than direct flights from airports like Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Under normal circumstances, the flights from Beijing are usually picked up within 8-11 days

2. Hong Kong: Compared to mainland China, Hong Kong has relaxed requirements for goods. Almost all goods that cannot be shipped from mainland China will go to Hong Kong, and the price is definitely higher than regular goods. The timeliness is almost the same, except for the additional time period from mainland China to Hong Kong. Almost all the dedicated flights from Hong Kong are cleared through customs in Los Angeles

3. South Korea: Similar to Beijing, but of a slightly lower level; Most of them are transported by truck to Yantai, Shandong (3-4 days), and then by sea from Yantai to Incheon, South Korea (1-2 days). South Korea takes off from Incheon Airport and usually flies directly to Los Angeles, USA. The time limit of Korea's flight is actually similar to that of Beijing, but the downside is that there are more unstable factors due to one more transfer; The normal time limit is about 9-11 days for extraction, but the price is generally more expensive than that of Beijing Airlines.

2、 Customs clearance airport

Regarding customs clearance airports: (Los Angeles LAX, New York JFK, Cincinnati CVG, Chicago ORD, Dallas DFW)

Los Angeles: Currently, 90% of air freight is cleared through customs in Los Angeles and then delivered to all parts of the United States; From the above figure, it can be seen that there are very few parts with yellow delivery time after customs clearance in Los Angeles, but there is no way. Los Angeles has the most flights and air freight is relatively cheap. Even if Los Angeles is the slowest and most inefficient airport for delivery, the vast majority of freight forwarders still choose this airport!

New York: New York is currently the second choice for freight forwarders besides Los Angeles, suitable for goods from the East and some parts of the United States and China. Air freight is relatively expensive, usually 2-4 yuan per kilogram more expensive than Los Angeles. Customs clearance is not as fast as Los Angeles, and it takes at least 2-3 days for normal goods to arrive at the airport for customs clearance and pickup; But the delivery time for goods in the central and eastern regions is better than in Los Angeles!

Cincinnati: Cincinnati is an industrial city in the central United States and an inland port. If it is used as a starting point for delivery, it can cover almost all Amazon warehouses in the United States, China, and the East, equivalent to 70% of FBA warehouses in the United States included, and the delivery time is on average 1-2 working days; And customs clearance at this airport is the easiest and fastest to pick up goods, and delivery is also the widest and fastest, there is no one; But there are relatively few routes and prices at this airport, and almost no freight forwarder will clear them here!

Chicago and Dallas: There are many routes available at both airports. Chicago's air transportation costs and delivery advantages are not inferior to those of New York, but there are very few people clearing customs here, mainly because the customs clearance procedures here are relatively strict; You should know that in a dedicated bill of lading, there are at least a dozen different products mixed with a dozen different shipping addresses. If there is a problem with one product, it will result in the entire batch of goods being detained for inspection; Chicago may even require a batch of goods to have only one consignee, which is also one of the reasons. Overall, if your goods are from one consignee and exceed 1 ton, you can choose to clear customs separately here, which is relatively cost-effective!

Recommendation index:

Los Angeles: (Customs clearance recommendation index: ★★★★☆) Suitable for Amazon goods starting from 7-9 postal codes;

New York: (Customs clearance recommendation index: ★★★★☆) Suitable for Amazon goods starting from 0-6 postal codes;

Cincinnati: (Customs clearance recommendation index: ★★★★★★) Suitable for Amazon goods starting from 0-7 postal codes;

Chicago: (Customs clearance recommendation index: ★☆☆☆☆) Suitable for Amazon goods starting from 0-6 postal codes;

Dallas: (Customs clearance recommendation index: ★★☆☆☆☆) Suitable for Amazon goods starting from 6-8 postal codes;

The reason why the difficulty of customs clearance varies among different airports in the United States is related to its federal system, where each state has different laws and regulations, and therefore the work methods of airport staff are also different; Comparatively speaking, the Western United States prefers Los Angeles Airport, while the Eastern United States prefers Cincinnati, which is the most perfect combination, followed by New York;

3、 Final delivery

All dedicated lines in the United States basically use FEDEX/UPS Ground delivery, which is a pure truck service, that is, ground service! Similar to SF Express's automobile transportation services. The delivery time for Group in the interior of the United States is 1-5 working days, and the island will be delivered within 6 working days or not; Please refer to the above picture for details. If you know where your goods are shipped and where they are cleared for customs, then you will know how many days it will take for your goods to be delivered. One thing to note is that the delivery deadline is strictly enforced according to working days. Never fantasize that the goods will arrive early, it will only slow down!

Assuming a delivery time of 5 working days, the calculation rule for delivery time is based on the second working day after extraction. If picked up on Monday, the earliest delivery time can only be signed for next Monday, and the calculation rule for delivery time is based on the second working day after picking up; If a dedicated line clears customs in Los Angeles and takes 13 days to pick up, the delivery will take another five working days (7 days), and the total time will be 20 days; So, if you want fast delivery, the customs clearance location is very important!

The most reasonable delivery time should be controlled within 1-3 working days, so even if it is picked up on Monday and Tuesday, it can still be delivered before Friday! This is very important. If the delivery cannot be completed within this week, it will take two more days, Saturday and Sunday, to waste two more days.

Another point worth explaining about delivery is the difference between FEDEX and UPS in terms of end delivery; Relatively speaking, it is reflected in the following aspects: 1. FEDEX and UPS have similar lost parts rates, and UPS service is slightly better; 2. UPS has many remote areas, but it can deliver to all Amazon warehouses in the United States, and multiple Amazon warehouses are rejected by FEDEX; 3. UPS often displays an unsigned receipt when it actually receives the goods;
